Hey guys. So currently we have four difficulty tiers. Here is my understanding. Easy - People who just found KZ can beat these maps without too much struggle. Medium - Needs a bit of effort or experience. Generally has a ladder, surf or b-hop blocks. Hard - Starts really requiring strafes and 'basic' tech. New players probably get stuck. Death - Requires well-executed tech, high quality strafes and/or loads of perfect bunny-hops. Currently, medium (129) and easy (98) are the most populated tiers (almost 80% of all maps). From what I can see, and when discussing categorisation of new maps, it feels like the distinction between easy, medium and some hard maps isn't very clear and is becoming less meaningful. With so many maps, in the low difficulties especially, I think it's time to re-evaluate the tiers. My first thought is six tiers like for surf maps. So let's try that. I'll give them names to give you a better idea. Very Easy - Someone who just knows how to air strafe can complete these maps. Easy - Requires basic knowledge of other KZ mechanics like longjumping, bhop, ladders, surfs. Medium - Anything in between. New players may get stuck but can finish with help/perseverance. Hard - Intended for experienced players only. Starts really requiring strafes and 'basic' tech. Very Hard - Experienced players may get stuck. Requires decent knowledge of advanced techniques. Death - Challenge maps requiring well-executed tech, high quality strafes and/or everything else throughout. This aims to split the current Easy and Medium into three tiers. Any maps in Tiers 1-3 will be suitable for new players. This would be a useful metric for servers wanting to provide a newb-friendly map pool. Tier 4 and above are maps that you could imagine a newb try and play and end up typing disconnect in console. Any maps that have achieved their difficulty due to a large number of perfect bunnyhops would be re-evaluated to Tier 4 (looking at you bkz_underground_crypt_v3). Tier 5 would simply include the harder of the current Hard maps and the easier of the current Death maps. Tier 6 would be exclusively for gruelling challenge maps (e.g. kz_retribution_v2_final, kzpro_gull_pidr_reborn). Tell me what you think.
